Introduction :

I am currently working on the Res Gestae Divi Augusti and the digital representation of the family relationships of persons cited in this Augustan text. My opinion is that the elaboration of methodological perspectives in the Digital Humanities and in the Humanities must involve humanities academics. Their function is essential. For the historical disciplines this function is occupied by the historians, enhanced by their own specialization, if there is one. Their conception of their own discipline is the starting point of the digital analysis and representation.

From these premises, it would help if you could try to answer to the following questions. These are not easy questions. I am particularly interested in methodological reflections and even epistemological considerations on these questions, addressing the nature of our disciplines as well as simply offering tool suggestions, with eventual usable examples for computer science.

Questions :

(1) Methodological questions:

- What is the use made by historians of prosopographical and genealogical information?

- Consequently which questions could be formulated to prosopographical and genealogical data?

(2) What are the limits of a traditional paper edition?

e. g.: representing all the relationships inside a tree is impossible due to the limited space of the paper surface. Consequently, it could be necessary to represent only one point of view, to make abstractions of some characters and to create complementary trees.

(3) Traditional bibliography:

In your opinion, what would be the most representative work of prosopography?

One bibliographical reference would be enough. It should represent what is, for you, the activity and the work made by the historian on prosopografical and genealogical data to serve a historical purpose. I would kindly ask you also to cite your bibliographical reference even if others had already cited it in their comments. Eventually, a bibliographical reference about Roman history, maybe referred to consuls, would be preferred.

(4) What does your imagination suggest to you when the question of the use of Information Technology for prosopography is raised?

There is a fourth question, that I write for the moment in English, as i could not translate it in German:

(4) Which used of Information Technologies your imagination suggests you when it comes to prosopography?

Introduzione

Grazie.
